Practical handling of release area uncertainties in avalanche simulations

For the application of avalanche simulation tools uncertainties must be identified and examined. To do so, we performed an analysis focusing on avalanche mass variation (release area altitude, released and entrained mass). The effect was investigated with regards to simulated flow depth, velocity, the pressure based runout length and corresponding probability maps. Besides the investigated variations, path topography and mass distribution along the avalanche track are of major importance.
