I’ve analysed New Zealand coronial causes of death for the people killed by avalanches during the last two decades. I discuss the activity at time of death, the low incidence of having surviving, uninjured potential companion rescuers and also what proportion of fatalities might have hypothetically survived if ICAR avalanche resuscitation checklist had been implemented. I also briefly discuss the current state of NZ avalanche rescue.
