Modelling the behaviour of stratified snowslabs

Stratification of snowpacks influences slab avalanche release. We present an analytical model for analyses of stratified snow packs. The model yields deformations, weak layer stresses and energy release rates of cracks in the weak layer. The coupled extensional and bending deformation of asymmetric snow packs of any layer order is considered by laminate analysis. The model provides highly efficient analyses of slopes under skier loading and stability tests such as the propagation saw test.
