Embedded ray-tracing in snow microstructure simulations

Microstructure simulations with ray-tracing for radiative heating is demonstrated within a 3D heat-conduction simulation. The demonstration uses a parallel algorithm that allows for rays to interact directly with a finite element mesh. This capability enables performing high-fidelity, multi-physics modeling of snow microstructure with precise optical properties computed within the simulation and will be an open-source module within the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE).

Single ray within 5mm x 5mm x 6mm micro-CT snow sample represented with a continuous finite element mesh. The ray is reflected and refracted at the ice/air interface. The interface is defined using a single phase variable ranging from 0 (air) to 1 (ice).
