Model-aided assessment and prediction of local avalanche risk

A model-chain to operationally assess and predict local avalanche risk is currently being developed at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), Austria. It provides continuous information about the snowpack evolution in critical avalanche starting zones, thereby assisting local avalanche warners in daily risk assessment. Various sources of local information are combined with an ensemble of weather forecast models and a location-tailored catalogue of runout scenarios in order to optimally assess and predict local avalanche risk.
